Dear Friends and Supporters,
Thank you for your past support of The Berntsen National Security Review. As many of you know, I have been involved in a great number of projects in the last year which have compelled me to shift my focus. Today, I would like to announce where that focus lies: on February 3rd, 2010, I filed my papers as a candidate for New York's First Congressional District.
Like many of you, I am deeply concerned with the direction of the country. We have a president that is a leftist ideologue who is pursuing both domestic and foreign policies that are detrimental to our nation's health. And we have a Congress that - if unchecked - will bankrupt us. The 14 trillion dollars of debt that we are now carrying is the result of failed leadership and cowardliness. I fear for our children's future. They will be compelled to repay a debt that will be impossible to pay back in their lifetime.
I have spent my entire adult life in the service of defending the United States from foreign enemies, serving for four years in the U.S. Air Force and then 23 years in the CIA's Clandestine Service. Throughout this time I was blessed to serve alongside patriots. But as I look to the future, I recognize that there can be no rest for those committed to preserving the greatness of America. Those who have served on the front lines of our conflicts will now have to fight their way into the halls of power in order to restore a level of sanity to a Congress whose representatives pass 2,000 page bills without having read them and pile debt upon debt.
I have the honor of being endorsed by the Combat Veterans for Congress. Along with 17 other former military service members who have all served in combat, we make up a group of individuals who are each committed to smaller government, lower taxes, and teaching our children about the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. We are about returning to the basics that made the U.S. economy the greatest creator of wealth and opportunity in the history of mankind.
No one should assume that the upcoming campaign to recapture the United States House of Representatives and Senate is assured or will by easy. Count on President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to borrow even more money as a means of launching new programs to strengthen their support among specific interest groups and constituencies for the 2010 election. They have no shame.
